The study sought to understand the role that KMS can play in enhancing Export Performance EP and then provide possible strategies that the manufacturing sector can adopt so as to benefit from such systems. The research took a combined approach by using both the qualitative and quantitative research approaches.


The survey study method was used since most of the reviewed literature on the topic indicated that this was the most used methodology. A sample of participants drawn from manufacturing companies that were within Harare was used. The cluster sampling technique was used to group the participants according to companies. Three participants from the Marketing, Human Resources and Information Technology departments were randomly selected from each company to ensure equal representation.


The questionnaire was the main instrument used in the research as supported by the literature study. The questionnaire was mailed and hand delivered to the participants depending on the availability of e-mail services. Secondary data was also collected from company websites and published articles such as magazines and other reports. The data was analysed through Chi-Square, Correlation and Regression analysis. Tables and graphs were used to present the results of the analysed data.


The findings of the research include; first, most of the respondents were not aware of KMS and the role they can play in enhancing EP, dissertation strategy management. Second, there is a positive relationship between the use of KMS and increased EP. Lastly, the study concluded that the relationship between use of KMS and increased EP was very significant.


However very few firms were aware of the benefit they could draw from the use of KMS. Thus the research study recommended that the Zimbabwean Manufacturing firms adopt a strategic approach to the use of KMS. The proposed KMS strategies and framework can be adopted to support knowledge creation; knowledge storage; knowledge transfer and knowledge utilisation which are key activities to improved EP as it emerged from the literature study, dissertation strategy management.

However Mujuru further argued that this had not yielded the same results for Zimbabwe particularly in the manufacturing sector. This view was also supported by Bimha who affirms that the country had been turned into a supermarket economy.


Today individual corporates and countries cannot avoid global competition Kotler, due to the increased use of Information Communication Technologies ICT. The IBM report alludes that most Multi-National Companies MNCs such as Nestle, Coca Cola and Toyota have embraced Information Technology IT driven Knowledge Management System KMS as tools for improving performance.


The dimension of using KMS to improve on corporate performance has been discussed by various authors Argote and Ingram, ; Malik and Malik, ; Pawlowski and Bick, ; Man Li, in dissertation strategy management. Man Li who studied some banks in developing countries concluded that those banks that will be able to utilize ICT infrastructure as KMS to manage knowledge will gain a competitive advantage.


While Malik and Malik also found out that there is a general acceptance that Knowledge Management KM is a primary source of value. They further contend that this is an indication that knowledge has taken a center stage in the definition, operation, and performance of corporates.


Pawlowski and Bick, who suggested a global KM framework concluded that as corporates go global their need for knowledge increases. Other authors Barney, ; Singer and Czinkota, ; Coff, ; Shamsuddoha et al. These researches seem to suggest the existence of a relationship between KMS and EP although not explicitly.


KM as viewed by Malik and Malik is the key dissertation strategy management driving exports success through the use of complex KMS. They argue that KMS are categorized into two groups namely people centered and technical centered systems.


While Pawlowski and Bick, affirm that KMS manage the intangible asset of intellectual capital within organizations thus creating distinct competencies. Learning from the EU and US success Zimbabwe as alluded to by Chigumira established ZimTrade to provide the relevant knowledge and support structures to stakeholders at a national level. ZimTrade implemented IT driven KMS by launching a website in to enhance national exports as suggested by Malik and Malik Instead they advocate for a strategic approach to the implementation of KMS.


On the other hand Hecht et al. While Vestal postulates that to understand the role of a KMS on performance there is need to establish its measurements or Critical Success Factor CSF Chong, dissertation strategy management, ; Hassan, and Al-Hakim, ; Akhavan, Jafari and Fathian, Furthermore some authors Barney, ; Coff, ; Singer and Czinkota, ; Shamsuddoha et al.

If the problem is left unattended it will further retard economic growth and negatively impact on the local manufacturing industry. Therefore, the present study seeks to evaluate the role of KMS on EP in Zimbabwe, dissertation strategy management. It also suggests a framework and strategies that can be used in defining the role of KMS and their implementation in dissertation strategy management EP thereby contributing to the existing body of knowledge, dissertation strategy management.


The specific objectives are as follows: 1. To establish the level of KMS awareness by players in the Zimbabwean dissertation strategy management sector, dissertation strategy management. To ascertain the KMS Critical Success Factors for dissertation strategy management EP in the Zimbabwean manufacturing sector. To determine the effect of KMS on EP in the Zimbabwean manufacturing sector. To recommend strategies that can be adopted by firms intending to utilise KMS to improve their EP.
